
Course Description
This course gives learners the knowledge to recognise a range of mental health conditions and how to start a supportive conversation and how to signpost the person for further help and support.
Each year 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health condition and 1 in 6 will experience a MH issue in the workplace.

Who Should Attend
This course is ideal for anyone who wants to gain a basic understanding on mental health and how to help someone towards professional help. This course does not teach learners how to diagnose conditions as this can only be done by a trained professional.

Minimum Age
The qualification is available to learners who are aged 14 and over. ​
​
Course Validity
The qualification is valid for 3 years from date of issue. It is strongly recommended that the learner attends annual refresher training.

Course Content
1. **Know what mental health is and why people develop mental health conditions:**
- Define mental health
- Understanding of the stigma surrounding mental health
- Identify factors that can affect a persons mental health

2. **Role of a MH First Aider:**
- Understand the role of a first aider for mental health.

3. **Know how to provide advice and practical support for a person presenting with a mental health condition.:**
- Outline the advice that should be presented
- Know when to contact the emergency services with a person presenting with a mental health condition

4. **Know how to recognise and manage stress:**
- Identify the signs on a person under stress
- State how stress can be managed
​
5. **Know how to recognise a range of mental health conditions:**
- Identify signs and symptoms of Anxiety
- Identify signs and symptoms of Depression
- Identify signs and symptoms of Eating Disorders
- Identify signs and symptoms of Psychosis
- Identify signs and symptoms of Self Harm
- Identify signs and symptoms of Suicide
How will I be assessed?
Assessment Criteria
Completion of a written assessment.

Grading is either Pass or Referred.
