Regulated Qualifications

In the UK, nationally recognised qualifications are given individual recognition numbers when they are added to the Regulated Qualification Framework (RQF)

The RQF is a national framework regulated by Ofqual on behalf of the government. What this means in practice is that RQF qualifications have been developed by subject matter experts to a National Occupational Standard (NOS). These standards help employers, schools, colleges, and learning providers to meet their users’ needs.

Because of this consultation and collaboration during development, and the strict adherence to prescribed criteria, RQF qualifications are usually recognised nationally.

Non-Regulated Qualifications

Non-regulated courses are educational offerings that have not been subjected to the same level of external scrutiny or accreditation. These courses are often developed by private organisations, companies, or even individual experts and they typically do not appear on national qualification frameworks.

It does allow greater flexibility and customisation and gives employers the opportunity to tailor the courses to their working environment.
